NSW authorities have issued a fine against an US-based online influencer and handed out two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation after a swarm of e-bike riders converged on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on a weekday.
A group of around 40 people riding e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The riders then turned around and rode through the downtown area and Haymarket.
"This had potential for people to be injured and killed," remarked a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.
Law enforcement indicated they did not chase right away the group out of concerns for public safety but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, at which point they broke up.
Later in the week, authorities announced they had issued the American online personality known as the influencer, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points per notice, connected to the bridge ride-out. They added that inquiries were continuing.
The influencer is said to have over 3.4 million subscribers on one platform and over 1.2 million on Instagram.
The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper recently following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.
"I accept the blame. That was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the rules and standards of the city. When I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."
The increase of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has prompted growing calls for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, commented that illegal ebikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Kids have done stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are presenting at our ERs are truly severe," the minister said. "We’ve got to ensure we prevent these things entering the country [and] officers are given the authority to crack down, to take them away, to destroy them, to destroy them."
NSW reported 226 injuries related to ebikes in 2024. But, in the initial half of the following year, that number jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
