Burns Dismissed on his Opening Delivery of the Ashes
The first delivery in a series represents significantly more than just a single pitch.
It signifies a gut-wrenching two to three seconds of pure theatre, where all of pre-match hype ultimately concludes.
"To define the tone for the whole contest would be truly cool," remarked England bowler Gus Atkinson after questioned regarding this prospect this week.
"I understand there have been several iconic first-ball occasions during Ashes matches. The opportunity to contribute to tradition would be cool."
As the bowler notes, that opening delivery has produced some of the truly iconic Ashes moments - events that seemed to define the narrative and at least proved convenient to reference in hindsight...
Skipper Ben Stokes closed innings on 393 for 8 shortly before stumps during the first day in the 2023 Ashes contest
Zak Crawley dedicated his build-up to 2023's Ashes thinking about striking that first ball for four runs - about aiming to "make an impact."
Australia skipper Pat Cummins ran in at the pavilion end and the batsman hammered a shot past the covers amid deafening applause from English supporters.
"I've always been a big fan regarding the opening delivery in the Ashes," the opener shared.
"I've been watching it since childhood and I understood several weeks out that should we won coin toss it meant an excellent possibility of facing that ball."
"I chatted to Brooky regarding this while we were playing golf on course - saying it would be cool if I could strike the first one for runs and make an impact."
The English didn't won the series - and Australia thrillingly won the opening match during the final day - but it was a glimpse of the way Ben Stokes' team would attack throughout that summer.
The English were bowled out for 147 during the first day of 2021's series
That occasion at Edgbaston remains one of rare first deliveries that went in favor of England, though.
Far more frequently they have been warning indicators regarding the Australian superiority that would be following.
During the 2021-22 series, Mitchell Starc bowled English batsman Rory Burns via a leg-stump half-volley at Brisbane to become the initial bowler to take a wicket with the first ball of a contest after Aussie seamer Ernest McCormick during 1936.
England's build-up was inadequate and in that moment of Australian celebration England received a blow to the stomach.
"My emotion simply dropped to the floor," said bowler Stuart Broad, who was watching in the pavilion.
"You have built for this series and immediately, first ball, he is out."
The Ashes were gone within eleven additional days while Australia claimed the contest four-nil.
Michael Slater made 176 in innings one of 1994's Ashes, having driven the first delivery of the contest for four
It is also no surprise an Australian captain who reveled in "mental disintegration" thought events were set through an identical moment twenty-seven years earlier.
Steve Waugh with the Australians were seeking a fourth Ashes win consecutively when batsman Michael Slater began 1994's series by emphatically driving England seamer Phil DeFreitas for four past backward point.
"It was like 'alright boys here we go once more we've dominated now'," recalled the captain, who would feature every Tests in a 3-1 domestic victory.
"Psychologically it was as if we are dominant now and we should keep attacking. We know how to defeat this team."
Significant.
Australia scored 602 for 9 declared during the first innings following Steve Harmison's wide, as captain Ricky Ponting scoring 196 runs
However what if that ball is only that - one in 10,000 or so beginning the series?
The errant delivery Steve Harmison bowled to start the 2006-07 Ashes - where he hurled the delivery into the grasp of skipper Andrew Flintoff at the slips, nearly missing the cut strip in the process - has become the most famous Ashes opener ever.
"I panicked," the bowler explained media soon after.
"I allowed the significance of the moment get to me. It all seemed so strange to me. My whole being felt tense."
"I could not get my hands to stop sweating. That initial delivery slipped from my grasp, the next did as well, then, after that, I had no control, zero."
England had won 2005's Ashes fifteen before but were resoundingly beaten five-nil. Some believe those Ashes ended in that exact moment.
"We weren't good enough to defeat
