A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Details of the Sale

Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Scale and Features

Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Roughly thirty percent of the land is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:

• Five separate hotels
• Over twenty restaurants and bars
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A boat marina and a functioning airport

Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.

The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
