A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the operator of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages restaurants across the country and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds fortune," stated the company president, a notable figure at the annual first sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
After the auction, the winner informed the press that he was "surprised at the winning bid," stating, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new acquisition exceeds his own notable purchases:
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record another time.
The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.
The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.
"I sense like I've started the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," shared one happy diner.
