A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have hit maximum pizza demand while broadening the company into chicken products has been replaced after disagreements with its governing body.
The former CEO is exiting after a brief tenure in charge, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who was with Domino's for more than two decades, had aimed to redirect Britain's leading pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, stating in a recent interview there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He observed chicken was the fastest-growing food category in the globe.
Reports indicate that there was friction between Rennie and the board over his focus and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was stepping down “by mutual agreement”.
In September, the chain launched its poultry brand – which the former chief referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the North West region and Northern Ireland.
While the company is still planning to expand it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it regards fried chicken as complementary to its core pizza business.
Bull, the Domino's chair, commented: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and value creation in the main pizza segment. We are concentrating on selecting the suitable leader to direct the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In August, it alerted that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.
Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Another major chain revealed the shutting of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Adapting to customer preferences towards balanced diets, the company has launched reduced-calorie options, such as its Thin & Crispy line of bakes below 400 kcal as well as vegan and allergy-friendly pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a individual has 909 kcal.
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is understood that she is not seeking to occupy the chief executive role long-term.
Frampton stated: “We have a multiple active development and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to executing at pace.”
Frampton noted these included ongoing development on the company's supply chain and menu innovation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also without a full-time CFO until the spring, when Andy Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. For now, Richard Snow is acting financial officer.
