One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their progress".
Summers, who previously headed the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's choice to step down.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization commented.
This development comes after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to make public its documents on Epstein.
The bill will then move to the office of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he plans to approve the bill, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his followers.
A collection of Epstein-related messages made public by the legislative panel recently referenced several prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to influential world leaders.
After the messages were made available with the wider community, he stated he accepted "complete accountability for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to restore faith and repair relationships with the people closest to me".
Summers occupied high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When declaring his withdrawal from public roles earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, confirmed that Summers was not associated with the organization.
He entered the board of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO the company leader.
