The announcement regarding a deal expected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for more than 24 months has caused joy and comfort across the nation.
A group which has campaigned for the return of Israeli hostages in Gaza voiced âdeep appreciationâ for what it called a âlandmark achievementâ.
The dealâstill requiring approved by the Israeli war cabinetâinvolves the release of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 deceased captives in return for 250 Palestinian detainees serving life sentences in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from Gaza.
So far, 148 captives have come backâmost as part of earlier truce agreementsâ51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages have been rescued.
Joyous gatherings took place at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered before the agreementâs signing.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music under American and Israeli bannersâa female attendee holding up a sign that read: âWe adore Trump.â
âItâs a magical day,â she expressed.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept while observing the people celebrating.
âIâm very excitedâitâs such a relief,â she said. âWe must witness their return home to their loved ones.â
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the news of his impending returned home.
âTheyâre coming back!... Matan is on his way home!â Einav Zangauker said as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, shared online: âMy son, you are returning home.â
The delight could be felt in the streets of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then cheering âLâchaimâ, meaning âfor lifeâ. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her friends, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: âMy Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. Youâre coming home.â
The cousin of Gil Dickman Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other hostage families in advocating for a deal that brings the homecoming of everyone still being held in Gaza.
âI hardly believe this is actually happening. Weâve been waiting for so long and here it is,â he said.
He said he was âshatteredâ that his cousin would not be among those returning to their homes yet felt âglowing with joyâ for the families of the hostages who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israelâs south together with his sibling.
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, remarked she experienced like she was living âin a dreamâ.
âWeâre more than grateful to President Trump and everything he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than before,â she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
âUntil the last hostage is here, weâre not opening the champagne. Weâre going to keep fighting... until the end,â she affirmed.
âNumerous events can happen up to the final instant so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to thank everyone who was involved in the work and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only once we have the last hostage safely home.â
Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity through a truce agreement earlier this year.
