A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property near the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.
Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who ran away after the incident was apprehended soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
âThis moment calls for sorrow,â commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.
The leader of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to debts incurred by the three owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the explosion.
âUpon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,â provincial police commander the police commander stated to the media.
A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,â he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.
Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
He thought the blast had occurred on a level above the doorway and informed journalists it was a âdeliberate and pre-planned murderâ. Just prior to the blast, he said members had âheard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being activatedâ.
âWe all knew the situation was dire,â neighbors stated to Italian media, noting that the trio had previously threatened to âblow themselves upâ rather than vacate the property.
âThe explosion had left a âterrible, very painful and dramatic tollâ.â
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the service of their country.
