At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Criminal Groups

A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.

Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 suspects were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities confirmed.

The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Locals have described the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement reported more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.

Mission Context

The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
