“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted through the ground as Nottingham Forest supporters reveled in a further success against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has happened since Francis's decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but Forest continue to treasure those memories. Similarly, major shifts have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with Forest looking refreshed and securing a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of progressing in the European competition.
For Nottingham Forest, this result – against a Swedish side that had not played for almost three weeks after ending in sixth place in their home competition – marked a third straight triumph across all competitions and further built on the momentum generated from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of the club's European Cup triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.
It proved to be an event filled with sentiment, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the European Cup final 46 years ago.
The home side fully embraced the history, honoring the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the red-carpet treatment. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were additionally in attendance. The two clubs shared a meal together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing reception when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb tifo was unveiled in the home stand.
“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read one part of a giant banner, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. A second stunning display showed Clough watching events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
So, the hosts had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the showing on the night? It was pretty good, too. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt wide inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his maiden European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defence led by their own homegrown skipper, Jansson, previously of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest defender Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a defender and into the pathway of Yates, who swept home with his right foot from the edge of the box to score his maiden strike since last March.
Yates was involved in Forest’s second goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his free header saved by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second outing since September, was the catalyst, lofting a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.
Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s driven shot was turned aside off the defender Colin Rösler, the son of former Man City striker Uwe, and an unmarked the defender had previously had a powerful header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who returned in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
This was the Swedish side's first match since the domestic league concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's energy. Forest extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo headed back a corner. The captain had a shot stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
Forest then pushed for more, with the winger chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the team that stunned Liverpool at their ground recently, when they also netted three times, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the final period.
It proved a flawless night for Forest. The coach could take off the defender with the game already boxed off and later introduced teenage full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche talked about the club legends supplying “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
