These initial charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be worked on in the studio, with participants completing several interpretive scenes in acrylics to be displayed in the village. The group has exclusive access of the venue, which is centered on an open courtyard and has a rooftop with views over the countryside. This sun-drenched culinary holiday, set on a riverside villa in the central Portuguese region, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of renowned chefs. Guests will master the art of meze spreads, attend a hands-on falafel session, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. The schedule includes visits to the village market and a nearby winery to sample Portuguese wines, combined with free time for strolls by the Funcho River, to unwind on the terrace or swim in the pool. St Ives is the perfect location for a sea shanty weekend. Guests will be taught historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and try their hand at composing original ones. There will be voice exercises, breathing exercises, performance tips and a final evening concert. The retreat is held in a rural hotel with views of St Ives Bay. Full board are included, such as a traditional tea on arrival, breakfast options, lunches to go and three-course dinners. Grog, alas, is not provided. Author and lecturer Greg Mosse leads the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He covers everything from plot, character development, setting and suspense, to sending manuscripts to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will co-host events at the beginning and end of the retreat. The holiday is based at a traditional complex in Vamos at the base of the White mountains – 10 one- and two-bedroom cottages surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to share). On the last night, aspiring writers celebrate with a concert in the courtyard and a final meal.
